History of the 7th Generation Conference

In 2008 a number of Oklahoma Tribes and the Oklahoma State Department of Health formed a unique collaborative partnership to offer a conference entitled, “Preparing for the 7th Generation: Preventing and Treating Commercial Tobacco Dependence.” The tribes and the state are working together and sharing resources to reduce the death and disease associated with commercial tobacco use and addiction.

Native Americans are at great risk of suffering from tobacco-related death and disease because they have the highest prevalence of commercial tobacco use compared to any other population group in Oklahoma. As a result, every deliberation of the partnership considers the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations so they no longer have to suffer the consequences of commercial tobacco abuse experienced today.
